Helping You Make the Case for a Digital Workplace | Business 2 ...

Digital Workplace Business Case

Do you feel like the lone ranger when it comes to building a digital environment in your workplace? Are you tired of getting the cold shoulder from the C-Suite when you propose investing in technology infrastructure for better collaboration and communication?

Take heart. You?re not alone.

Management is usually slow to support initiatives that entail costs to the enterprise ? unless you can demonstrate a clear and tangible ROI.

It doesn?t help that it?s impossible for you to put hard numbers on how a digital environment, particularly new technology, will benefit your company or organization. It?s not like you could punch in some numbers and come up with an estimate of exactly how much a digital workplace will add to your bottom line.

Fortunately, there?s help.

A recent report by the Digital Workplace Forum (DFW), ?Digital Workplace Business Case? will help you present the hard numbers associated with the benefits of a digital workplace.

Written by Paul Miller, author of The Digital Workplace: How Technology is Liberating Work, the report is geared towards helping you get management support to turn your company into a digital workplace.

What Benefits Count to Management?

The study asked respondents to rank the importance their leadership would place on possible benefits of a digital workplace. Their responses were, from most important to least important:

  • Improve productivity of employees
  • Increase retention rates of staff
  • Reduce real estate and associated costs
  • Allow for disaster planning and operational continuity
  • Gains for the environment
  • Reduce absenteeism among employees

Among the hard benefits from a digital workplace, improving productivity among the workforce is expected to have the biggest impact on swaying senior management.

For the soft benefits, the following was the perceived ranking of importance to management:

  • Attracting and retaining the best talent
  • Increased employee engagement
  • More innovation and generation of ideas
  • Modernise or influence company culture
  • Appeal to generation Y or millenials working style
  • A better work/life balance for staff

Getting and keeping the best employees and increasing engagement were almost tied for the most important soft benefits.

These are the benefits to focus on when making the case for a digital environment to your C-suite.

Some Numbers to Back You Up

For me, the most valuable part of DFW?s report is the collection of facts that demonstrate the hard benefits of a digital workplace.

The report won?t show you how to estimate income increases or savings in your workplace. But it will tell you exactly how real companies have done so from their digital investments.

For example, here are some of the data on how the digital workplace increases productivity:

  • After the US Air Force Central Adjudication Facility implemented its telework programme, 100% of the teleworkers said communication with their supervisors improved, and productivity increased 55.62%.
  • In Cisco, 69% of employees who responded to a survey said they felt more productive when working at home and 75% said the timeliness of their work improved.
  • At Sun Microsystems, it is estimated that 60% of time saved from commuting to work was spent working. Therefore, employees gave back time savings to their employers.
  • Ecolab observed that work-at-home customer service representatives took 16% more calls and increased their quick call resolution by 10%.
  • Fairview Health Services saw a 50% decrease in overtime work after it set up a workplace flexibility programme.

These are just a few of the hard facts from the DFW report, which will help you make the business case for investments in a digital workplace. DFW provides data for each of the hard benefits mentioned above.

You can download the report here.

Make the Report Work for You

Go over it, figure out which benefits would resonate most with your senior managers. Use the data to back up claims that investing in a digital environment will pay off in your company.

Many enterprises, including Fortune 500 companies and possibly your competitors, are already transforming themselves into digital workplaces ? and reaping the rewards. DFW found that the statement, ?Our direct competitors are all doing it and we aren?t,? would have the most impact on senior management teams. So find out what your competitors are doing and if you?re falling behind, let your managers know.

Over To You

Which benefits do you think are most important to your senior executives? Which numbers would be most meaningful to them? What else do you need to sway the powers that be in your company?

Baidu buys control of streaming video portal iQiyi, raises stakes in ...

Baidu Announces Acquisition of Providence Equity Partners' Stake in iQiyi

BEIJING, Nov. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Baidu Inc. (NASDAQ: BIDU), the leading Chinese language Internet search provider, today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement with Providence Equity Partners ("Providence") pursuant to which Baidu will purchase shares of iQiyi.com ("iQiyi") held by Providence for an undisclosed amount. Upon completion, Baidu will have a substantial majority stake in iQiyi.

iQiyi, launched in April 2010 and known as "Qiyi" until November 2011, is the first online video platform in China to focus exclusively on fully licensed, high-definition and professionally-produced content. In August 2012, iQiyi was ranked as the number one online video platform in China in terms of average time spent per user and number two in terms of total monthly time spent, according to iResearch, a China-based research firm.

Baidu and Providence expect the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of 2012, subject to customary closing conditions. Upon completion of the transaction, iQiyi will be consolidated into Baidu's financial statements. iQiyi will continue to operate as a separate brand with its existing management team.

"Online video is a key strategic vertical for Baidu as user numbers and time-spend continue to increase exponentially, underscoring the tremendous potential in the sector," said Robin Li, chairman and CEO of Baidu. "We are very pleased with the progress iQiyi has made and have confidence that iQiyi's management will continue to grow its leading position. Going forward, we see users spending more and more time on online video and we will integrate iQiyi's content more seamlessly into Baidu's overall search and mobile services."

Mr. Li added, "I want to extend my appreciation to the Providence team for their contribution to and support of iQiyi over the last two-and-a-half years."

Dr. Yu Gong, founder and CEO of iQiyi, added, "iQiyi has established a great business foundation and strong brand recognition and we look forward to leveraging our relationship with Baidu to further drive superior user and advertising customer experience."

Angels decline Dan Haren's $15.5 million option

Dan Haren became a free agent Friday night after the Los Angeles Angels failed to work out a trade and then declined the pitcher's 2013 option.

Haren, a three-time All-Star from 2007-09, gets a $3.5 million buyout under the deal, which included a $15.5 million club option for 2013. The Angels' decision came after a proposed trade to the Chicago Cubs for closer Carlos Marmol fell apart.

Los Angeles also declined to make a $13.3 million qualifying offer to free-agent outfielder Torii Hunter.

"We want to create as much flexibility as we can in our ability to navigate for 2013 and beyond," general manager Jerry Dipoto said. "In business, sometimes you make tough decisions."

The Angels agreed to trade Haren to the Cubs, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press earlier Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal did not get completed.

Marmol's contract gives him the right to submit a list of up to five teams he can't be traded to without his consent. The person said Marmol told the Cubs he would agree to the trade, but would not say whether the reliever provided his written consent.

A spokesman for the Cubs declined to comment.

"Obviously, it didn't happen," Dipoto said. "We had a variety of different deals that we worked through during the course of the last week or 10 days. Some were closer than others. But I'll leave it at that."

Marmol, an All-Star in 2008, had 114 saves for the Cubs over the past five years. Yet he lost his job as the team's closer several times due to ineffectiveness and a lack of control.

The Angels had until midnight EDT on Friday to exercise Haren's option for next season. The 32-year-old right-hander went 12-13 with a career-worst 4.33 ERA in 30 starts this year and was on the disabled list for the first time.

Haren became the second starting pitcher in three days to be jettisoned by the busy Angels. They shipped Ervin Santana to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday for minor league left-hander Brandon Sisk.

In addition, Zack Greinke became a free agent.

"Obviously, we have a great interest in Zack Greinke. We traded for him once. He did a tremendous job for us in the second half of the season and down the stretch, and we have a great deal of interest in pursuing the potential of bringing him back," Dipoto said. "But there is a lot that has to happen between now and opening day next year that will define whether that's going to happen or not."

After adding Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson last year for a combined $317.5 million, the Angels appear a bit more cautious this offseason.

"You can't just continually gather assets without having logical solutions as to how they all fit," Dipoto said.

Kimi Raikkonen feels contended with one-year contract extension at Lotus ? Formula 1 news

Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen is feeling contended with the contract extension at his current team for the 2013 Formula 1 season.

Raikkonen had been surrounded by many rumours that he may leave his present team at the end of this season. However, the Enstone based team has extended his contract for the coming year after the Indian Grand Prix and has discharged all the speculations.

The Finnish driver returned to F1 after taking part in the World Rally Championship during the last two years. He has performed quite convincingly in the season so far and has impressed everyone with his amazing pace.

Furthermore, he has developed a very good relationship with his team and has expressed that he is happy with the one-year contract extension. In addition, he said that he is going to try his best to come up even stronger in the coming year.

?It makes more easier for me and I don't see a reason why I should make a long-term contract you probably wouldn't make if you just want to make sure that you have somewhere to drive in the coming years,? he said. ?I try to do well enough so I don't have to worry when it comes down to signing and I will have somewhere to race. For me it's easier like that; if you want to go somewhere and do something else it's less hassle and less problems.?

At present, he is standing at 3rd place in the drivers? championship. Besides, he is ahead of Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing and is behind his major opponent, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari.

Even though, the Finn is quite behind Sebastian Vettel of the Milton Keynes based team, who is presently leading the drivers? standings, nevertheless, he is still eying to win the championship title as there are still four races left.

It will be important to mention that the British team has struggled due to its poor qualifying performance in the season until now. Therefore, the 2007 world champion has insisted that they really need to make the significant step-ups to improve their qualifying pace in order to attain promising results in the remainder of the season.?

crockpots on sale at Freddy's through october - Forum and ...

This is the full, original recipe; here?s the link: http://mynorthwest.com/?nid=108&sid=659480
1 lb hamburger
1 lb Italian link sausage
2-24oz jars of Classico Spicy Tomato & Basil Pasta Sauce
1 small jar Kalamata Olives in Cabernet Wine (or black olives)
1 small onion
16 oz ricotta cheese
2 lb block mozzarella cheese
1 egg
1 lb package lasagna noodles (probably won't use all)
1. saute sausage, slice into thin pieces.
2. brown hamburger with diced onion
3. combine sauce with sausage/burger/sliced olives and simmer for 20- 30 minutes
4. mix ricotta with the egg
5. slice mozzarella into medium thin pieces
6. cook noodles for a few minutes until they're just pliable-don't over cook!
7. layer crockpot in this order: sauce-noodles-ricotta/egg-mozzarella, then repeat-liberally overlapping noodles
8. leave yourself a quarter inch or so of room at the top, as it may expand a little while cooking
9. cook on low for 6-8 hrs, and enjoy!

**********************************************************************************
Below is MY version; in my 4.5qt crock it made a nice, tall dish. I had a stash of no-boil noodles, and they were so easy to use I'll probably use them in the future. I cut the above recipe in half because I didn't want a zillion servings. Plus I wanted something close to a traditional thickness, not something that filled the crock most (or all) of the way. Although, a full crock would be great for a potluck.

Slow Cooker Lasagne About 6 servings
8oz no-boil lasagna noodles* (if you use traditional parboiled noodles, reduce red wine to 1/2c or omit it altogether)
1lb ground pork
1 24oz jar of your favorite pasta sauce - Classico works well
1 small can of sliced black olives, drained (1/4 to 1/2c, or to taste)
1 1/2c chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1c red wine (optional, but if you use no-boil noodles and want to avoid the alcohol, substitute 1c water)
12oz cottage cheese or ricotta
1lb mozzarella cheese, sliced or shredded
1 whole egg
If desired, spray crockpot with non-stick pan spray or vegetable oil; set aside. In a large saut? pan or Dutch oven, brown sausage over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; saut? until onion becomes translucent. Add pasta sauce, black olives, and wine or H2O; simmer gently for 20-30 mins. Remove from heat.

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk egg with cottage cheese; set aside.

Add enough sauce to just cover the bottom of crockpot. Add a layer of lasagna noodles, breaking them to fit, filling in the corners as best you can. Add approx. half of the cottage chz and egg mixture, then about half of the sliced or shredded cheese, then approx. half of remaining sauce. Add another layer of noodles and c/c mixture, a layer of sauce, then top with remaining cheese. If you screw up the layers, don't worry, it usually turns out just fine.
Cook on low for 6-8hrs.

*8oz of no-boil lasagne noodles require about 1 cup of liquid be added to the dish; I use wine but water will work, too.

Rome bans eating in tourist areas

ABOVE: This guy is totally breaking the law (Photo, Bonnie Bloge/Flickr.com)

If the guys I play bocce with are any indication, eating and sitting around are two of Italy?s national pastimes ? just don?t do it in Rome.

A city which prizes it?s culinary culture and a laid-back way of life has banned eating at public monuments like the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and the?Colosseum?according to the New York Times:

?[The] measure outlaws eating and drinking in areas of ?particular historic, artistic, architectonic and cultural value? in Rome?s center, to better protect the city?s monuments, which include landmarks?Fines range all the way up to $650 for culinary recidivists.?

Romans have probably noshed at the Spanish Steps since they were built in 1717 and at least one politician, Angelo Bonelli is leading the charge against the new ban:

?Rome has passed any number of bans during the past five years, against prostitutes, homeless people and men taking their shirts off in parks to sunbathe, Mr. Bonelli noted, often to little effect. ?You can?t govern with bans,? he said of Mayor Alemanno. ?It?s a sign of his inability to control the city.?

Many Romans agree. One recent Saturday, a few hundred protesters gathered in a flash mob on the steps leading to City Hall, chomping on pizza and panini as police officers registered the offenders. ?Panino is not a crime,? one attendee wrote on his Facebook page.?

Samsung sees 10 percent growth in PC sales

(AP) ? Samsung Electronics Co. said Wednesday it expects 10 percent growth in PC sales by volume this year as it bets on new PCs that are hybrids of laptops and tablets to lift sluggish PC demand.

Samsung's PC team chief said the company hopes the ATIV series of laptops and tablets, which are powered by a new version of Microsoft's Windows operating system, would help lift its sales at a difficult time for the PC industry.

"We expect a 10 percent annual growth by volume and 25 percent growth by sales this year as we increase shipments and introduce premium products," Samsung's Executive Vice President Nam Seong-woo said at a media briefing.

Samsung is among the many global PC makers hoping that Windows 8 will help them lure back consumers who have flocked to smartphones and tablets.

Research firms have scaled back their forecasts for annual PC sales because of the weak global economy, which is pressuring corporate spending, and heightened competition from makers of smartphones and tablet PCs. IHS iSuppli said worldwide PC shipments will post the first decline in 11 years in 2012.

In addition to other Windows 8 products by Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard and Sony, Samsung's ATIV series also faces competition from Samsung's own Galaxy series of smartphones and tablets that fueled Samsung's rise as the world's top-selling manufacturer of mobile devices.

Samsung tried to remain upbeat about the PC market.

"Some say it is the post-PC era. But it is the new era for PCs that is emerging," Nam said. "Smart PCs should be seen as one of the mobile devices."

Powered by Windows 8, the ATIV Smart PCs support touch-based features such as tapping and swiping the 11.6-inch screen to start programs. It comes with a detachable keyboard and Samsung added a digital pen and note-taking software to attract tablet PC buyers.

Samsung is starting sales of the ATIV Smart PCs later this week when other Windows 8 devices will go on sale globally.

EU to mull plan to bring non-euro states into bank union

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union countries will examine a plan this week to allow the ECB to supervise banks in states outside the euro zone alongside those within the currency area, according to an EU document that lays down limits on the central bank's role.

Last week, EU leaders agreed to build a new system of supervision led by the European Central Bank, as a step towards a banking union where chiefly euro zone countries would jointly back problem lenders, in a move to underpin the currency.

But the plan has sparked concerns among the 10 countries in the wider European Union that do not use the euro that they will be indirectly affected by the ECB's new supervisory powers and put at a disadvantage, whether they join the scheme or not.

For the framework to become reality, diplomats must first find a way to accommodate countries outside the euro zone, such as Sweden or Denmark, who may want to join the scheme.

On Tuesday, EU officials circulated a document outlining one way to break the impasse, by establishing a supervisory board within the ECB, a body that would play a role in supervising lenders and where non-euro zone members would have a vote.

"This helps square the circle for non-euro countries," said one EU official. "It is an effort to find equal treatment."

In the draft legislation obtained by Reuters, officials make clear that the final say is with the ECB although it must explain itself if it rejects a decision by the supervisory body.

"The ECB will take all the key decisions," said a second EU official.

This may worry a country outside the euro zone such as Hungary, which wants equal representation if it is to sign up. Granting this is legally difficult, however, because the central bank answers only to the 17 members of the euro zone.

As a concession to those worried that the ECB's new remit will be too wide, the document fences off the central bank's powers from those of each country's agencies.

It says national supervisors should "carry out regular operational tasks" in monitoring banks, while the ECB focuses its efforts on systemic banks and those lenders which have been bailed out. Again, ultimate authority would rest with the ECB.

The banking union would have three major steps: the ECB takes over monitoring euro zone banks and others that sign up; a single fund is created to close down and settle the debts of failed banks; and a comprehensive scheme to protect savers' deposits is established.

The new supervision should pave the way for the new euro zone rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), to directly inject capital into struggling banks, such as those in Ireland.

Britain and all other members of the European Union must give the green light to the banking union before it can go ahead, an approval that could be delayed or withheld if their concerns are not addressed.

The close ties between some troubled governments and the banks they supervise, and on which they also rely to buy their debt, have dragged both ever deeper into crisis.

A banking union would break this link by making the policing of banks supranational and establishing central schemes paid into collectively to cover the costs of closing failed lenders and protecting savers' deposits.

Samsung demos Series 5 Ultra Touch and Series 5 Ultra Convertible Ultrabooks, we go handson

Well, look at what we have here! We just swung by Samsung's booth at Computex, and the outfit is showing off not one, but two touch-enabled variations of its Series 5 Ultrabooks. Penn State trial to paint 2 portraits of Sandusky

(AP) ? Before his arrest on child molestation charges seven months ago, Jerry Sandusky was widely considered a living Penn State sports legend and the founder of an exemplary organization that worked with at-risk children.

Then came allegations, spelled out in a pair of grand jury reports, that a monster was concealed beneath a veneer of respectability and charitable leadership, a man who would systematically target and groom boys to feed predatory sexual desires.

Despite Sandusky's repeated delay requests, it now appears the case will get under way Tuesday with the selection of jurors from among his neighbors in the central Pennsylvania county that is home to Penn State, an area that before November could be called Happy Valley without a hint of irony or bitterness.

The scandal toppled football coach Joe Paterno, forced major changes at the highest levels of Pennsylvania's largest and most prominent university, and raised still-unanswered questions about the response by various people to the warning signs that had periodically arisen over more than a decade.

After months of planning, court officials say they are prepared for what could be several weeks of trial, building on experiences in other states with high-profile proceedings. About 250 reporters have registered to attend, and 29 television trucks are expected in tiny Bellefonte.

"I think we're ready to go. A few loose ends between now and Monday night, maybe even Tuesday morning, but we're pretty confident we're ready," said Jim Koval, spokesman for the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts.

The Nittany Lions' former defensive coordinator has consistently maintained his innocence, so jurors will have to sort out which of the two dramatically opposed versions of Jerry Sandusky is the truth: the avuncular ex-coach devoting his life to help needy children or the predator who used his access to boys to commit vile and criminal sexual attacks?

He was arrested twice, the first time in early November, when prosecutors charged him with abusing eight boys, including two whose identities had not ? and still have not ? been determined by investigators, boys witnesses said were subjected to sexual acts by Sandusky inside football team showers.

The second arrest came about a month later, when state prosecutors added charges related to two more boys. Sandusky's lawyers are still seeking to have all or some of the 52 counts against him dismissed on various grounds, more than enough counts to send the 68-year-old defendant to prison for the rest of his life.

The case has followed a twisted path to trial, starting with the decision by all the judges in Centre County to recuse themselves, so the state Supreme Court brought Judge John Cleland, a veteran jurist from northwestern Pennsylvania, to preside.

More recently his lawyers sought several times to delay the trial, but a state appeals court turned them down after Cleland ruled against them and kept the case on track to begin this week. Defense attorneys have appealed that ruling to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which could rule sometime Monday.

On Friday, a group of news organizations that includes the AP sought clarity on what types of electronic transmissions will be permitted from the courtroom during trial.

Sandusky's wife, Dottie, has stood by him, posting his bail and issuing a statement in early December that said the accusers had concocted lies that left her "shocked and dismayed." Sandusky appeared on NBC to deny he was a pedophile and ramble on when asked if he was sexually attracted to boys.

He later revisited the topic, telling The New York Times the question took him aback.

"I was sitting there saying, 'What in the world is this question?' You know, if I say, no, I'm not attracted to boys, that's not the truth, because I'm attracted to young people, boys, girls ..." he said.

Sandusky hasn't given any more interviews, and Cleland later issued a gag order that has effectively stopped his lawyers and prosecutors from talking about the case. But their prior statements and court filings suggest the trial will hinge on testimony by the accusers, and Sandusky's lawyers are determined to attack their credibility.

Recently, a defense filing referred to Victims 11 through 17, suggesting investigators might have identified seven additional accusers for whom Sandusky has not been charged. Whether those people exist, and if they will testify ? or if Sandusky will take the stand ? are among the questions the trial should answer.

Lawyers for five of the young men have asked Cleland to take steps to protect their anonymity, but the judge has yet to rule. The Associated Press doesn't identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted without their consent.

Their testimony will be all the more critical to prosecutors, because unlike sexual abuse cases, the Sandusky investigation likely did not produce forensic evidence. But the scope and nature of the prosecution's evidence, and its witness list, haven't been disclosed.

One closely watched witness will be Mike McQueary, an assistant coach who was a graduate assistant in 2001 when he said he saw Sandusky naked in the team showers with a boy of about 10 described in the grand jury report as Victim 2. McQueary didn't confront Sandusky but reported the incident to Paterno, who contacted Tim Curley, the athletic director.

Paterno, who was removed as coach the week after Sandusky's arrest, died in January of lung cancer. Curley was later charged, along with university vice president Gary Schultz, with failure to properly report suspected abuse and lying to the investigative grand jury. Both men deny the allegations and await trial.

The trial will focus on the specific criminal charges against Sandusky, so a more complete set of facts may have to wait until the Curley and Schultz case goes to trial, Penn State and others who are investigating release their findings and any civil litigation is resolved. That process could take years to play out.

Syria's Assad says he's surgeon saving patient

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian President Bashar Assad defended his government's crackdown on opponents Sunday, saying a doctor performing messy emergency surgery does not have blood on his hands if he is trying to save a patient.

In his first speech since January, Assad appeared unmoved by scathing international criticism of his ferocious response to the 15-month-old revolt against his rule, which has killed up to 13,000 people, according to activist groups. He also denied responsibility for last week's Houla massacre of more than 100 people, saying not even "monsters" would carry out such an ugly crime.

He said terrorists have pushed his country into war.

"When a surgeon in an operating room ... cuts and cleans and amputates, and the wound bleeds, do we say to him your hands are stained with blood?" Assad said in a televised speech to parliament. "Or do we thank him for saving the patient?"

Assad insisted the revolt was the work of foreign-backed extremists ? not reformers seeking change.

Although the country has faced widespread international condemnation since Syrian troops unleashed a relentless crackdown on protesters last year, a massacre last week in the central region of Houla has brought fresh urgency to solving the crisis.

The opposition and the government have exchanged accusations over the Houla killings, each blaming the other for the house-to-house killings of more than 100 people, many of them small children. U.N. investigators have said there are strong suspicions that pro-regime gunmen are responsible for at least some of the killings.

Assad denied his forces had anything to do with Houla.

"Not even monsters would carry out (the crimes) that we have seen, especially the Houla massacre. ... There are no Arabic or even human words to describe it," he said in his first public comments about the mass killing.

Assad did acknowledge the toll the crisis has taken on the country, suggesting all the blood that has been spilled is necessary to root out the forces working to drive him from power.

"Today we are defending a cause and a country," he said. "We do not do this because we like blood. A battle has been forced on us, and the result is this bloodshed that we are seeing."

Members of the Syrian opposition brushed off his comments as meaningless.

"It is a desperate and silly speech that does not merit a response," said Adib Shishakly, a Saudi-based member of Syria's main opposition group, the Syrian National Council. "He didn't offer anything to the Syrian people during the 70 minutes he spoke."

Shishakly, the grandson of a former president of Syria, described Assad's statements on the Houla massacre as "lies to justify the killings because of the immense international pressure on his regime."

The U.S. has taken advantage over global outrage over Houla to reach out to Syria's most important ally and protector Russia to join a coordinated effort to resolve the deadly conflict. Until now, Russia, has provided a layer of protection for Damascus, refusing to support any move that could lead to foreign intervention in Syria.

A Russian Foreign Ministry statement issued Sunday said Russia was awaiting the results of the investigation into the massacre at Houla and was "disturbed that some countries went ahead and cast blame."

Although Assad's words reflected many of the same general points of his previous speeches ? blaming terrorists and extremists, vowing to protect national security ? his comments on Houla were widely anticipated.

"If we don't feel the pain that squeezes our hearts, as I felt it, for the cruel scenes ? especially the children ? then we are not human beings," Assad said.

Syria's uprising began with mostly peaceful protests, but a brutal government crackdown with tanks, machine guns and snipers led many in the opposition to take up arms. Now, the conflict has morphed into an armed insurgency.

The violence has grown increasingly chaotic in recent months, and it is difficult to assign blame for much of the bloodshed as the country spirals toward civil war. The government restricts journalists from moving freely, making it nearly impossible to independently verify accounts from either side.

Assad, 46, who inherited power from his father in 2000, is still firmly in control after more than a year of warfare that has torn at the country's fabric and threatened to undermine stability in the Middle East.

A cease-fire plan brokered by international envoy Kofi Annan is violated by both sides every day, but Western leaders continue to pin their hopes on diplomatic pressure, with the U.S. and others unwilling to get deeply involved in another Arab nation in turmoil ? particularly one as unpredictable as Syria.

The rebel Free Syrian Army is determined to bring down the regime by force of arms, targeting military checkpoints and other government sites. A U.N. observer team with nearly 300 members has done little to quell the bloodshed.

Al-Qaida-style suicide bombings have become increasingly common in Syria, and Western officials say there is little doubt that Islamist extremists, some associated with the terror network, have made inroads in Syria as instability has spread.

Fears also have risen that the violence could spread and provoke a regional conflagration. Syria's regional ties make its conflict among the most explosive of the Arab Spring. The regime has alliances with powerful forces including Lebanon's Hezbollah and Shiite powerhouse Iran.

Already, clashes have broken out between pro- and anti-Syrian groups in northern Lebanon, with at least eight people killed late Friday and early Saturday, Lebanese security officials said.

In Sunday's speech, Assad said his opponents have ignored his moves toward reform, including a referendum on a new constitution and recent parliamentary elections. He suggested this meant that the call for democracy was not the driving force of the revolt.

"We will not be lenient. We will be forgiving only for those who renounce terrorism," he said.

Assad has acknowledged there are genuine calls for reform, although the opposition says he has offered only cosmetic changes that do little to change a culture where any whisper of dissent could lead to arrest and torture.

The president said the doors of Damascus were open for dialogue with the opposition ? a key component of Annan's peace plan ? as long as the parties have no foreign agendas or involvement with terrorism.

95% Moonrise Kingdom

All Critics (110) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (104) | Rotten (6) | DVD (1)

It's an adventure, a love story, a biblical allegory complete with approaching storm, a mash note to composer Benjamin Britten and a profoundly touching discourse on the needs of troubled children.

"Moonrise Kingdom" is Anderson's seventh movie, and it's the first since "Rushmore" that works from the opening shot to the final image.

It's a fable about what it feels like to be 12 years old and afflicted, from head to toe, by a romantic crush the size of a planet.

Like all Wes Anderson movies, it is na?ve, mannered, pretentious and incomprehensible.

Wes Anderson's mind must be an exciting place for a story idea to be born.

Wes Anderson's most intimate film since Bottle Rocket (1996) and maybe his most deeply felt overall.

Another great film from Anderson, and the beginning of a fantastic career for Hayward.

The adventurous circumstances and sensations of young love permeate Moonrise Kingdom.

It's the filmmaker's best piece of live-action cinematic art since 'Rushmore' and nicely joins 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' in his return to fine form. (Full Content Review for Parents also available)

Moonrise Kingdom feels like a culmination, like Anderson has been working towards this one movie.

Wes Anderson films are not so much directed as curated.

Funny and heartfelt in equal measure, "Moonrise Kingdom" is a top-to-bottom charmer and one of the most heartfelt peans to the power of young love that you will see anytime soon.

Has individual moments that are alluring to the eyes, but like the aforementioned dollhouse where Suzy lives, take a closer look inside and it becomes obvious how artificial all the parts are.

Who else can capture with such chilling accuracy that fragile period between childhood and disillusionment, the time when the novelty of true love overwhelms the heart with its immensity and futility?

If you can meet with realism and surrealism and treat those two impostors just the same, then yours are the movies and everything in them. I'm paraphrasing Emilio Estevez but I think you get the idea.

A true delight - a fun, clever, and, of course, whimsical tale about the days when love seemed worth running away from home over and getting a scout badge meant the world.

Anderson's most delightfully bittersweet live-action movie since The Royal Tenenbaums.

A gossamer fable of adolescent romance, played out with the cheekily whimsical, visually delicious style for which Anderson is famous.

Copper-nickel nanowires from Duke University could make ubiquitous printable circuits

Nanowires

Nanowires, although they're building steam, still have to overcome the not-so-small problem of cost -- they often have to use indium tin oxide that's not just expensive, but fragile. Duke University has developed copper-nanowire films that could remedy this in style. The choice of material is both a hundred times less expensive to make than indium and is much more durable. It's flexible, too: if layered on as a coating, the nanowires would make for considerably more viable wearable electronics that won't snap under heavy stress. The catch, as you might suspect, stems from the copper itself, which doesn't conduct as much electricity as indium. The nickel will keep your copper electronics from oxidizing faster than the Statue of Liberty, however. Any practical use could be years away, but further successes from Duke could quickly see printable electronics hit the mainstream power and power our dreams of flexible displays.
