Cheers To Science: The Philadelphia Science Festival Hosts A ...

The Philadelphia Science Festival gives a big ?Cheers!? to food and drink this week with a lineup of events intended to educate the mind and please the palate.

Tonight through April 28, lovers of food, drink and science ought to take note and reserve tickets for tasting events at bars and restaurants like Continental Old City, National Mechanics and Frankford Hall.

? Sweet and Savory: Hives and Honey: Buzz down to Continental Old City this evening to visit with members of the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild and learn about bees, honey and hives. Cocktails and appetizers are included, which really takes the sting out of Monday.

Science On Tap Quizzo: Get ready for an evening of science-filled trivia and plenty of adult beverages at National Mechanics hosted by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the Chemical Heritage Foundation, the American Philosophical Society, the Wagner Free Institute of Science and the M?tter Museum. With these academic institutions posing brainy questions for teams to figure out, this edition of Science on Tap ought to fill up quickly.

Snag tickets for this interactive tasting experiment and learn which beverages and tactics actually soothe the burn. Attendees must be 21 or older.

Perceptions of Flavor: An Evening with Shola: Know for his mastery of molecular gastronomy, chef Shola Olunloyo brings his signature style of culinary art to Continental Old City, dishing up four ?courses? of mind-blowing flavors (think ?Everything Bagel? ice cream). Olunloyo is joined by scientists from the Monell Chemical Senses Center to explain the complexities of taste versus flavor.

The Sustainable Table: A Dinner Experience: Make the short trek to the lovely Riverbend Environmental Education Center for the most elegant event of the festival and enjoy a four-course meal from chef Max Hansen. During the decadent meal, hear from Bryan Fenstermaker, the Director of Programs at The Enterprise Center Community Development Corporation, and discuss the origins of the fare on the table.

? Fun With Fermentation: Kimcheese: Join two local food writers for a fun and funky tasting at DiBruno Bros. in Center City. Amanda Feifer, author of the blog Phickle.com, presents homemade samples of the fermented Korean dish kimchee, while Tenaya Darlington, a.k.a Madame Fromage, brings the cheese. Darlington?s collaborative book Di Bruno Bros. House of Cheese: A Guide to Wedges, Recipes, and Pairings is set to be released in May.

? Beer Chemistry: Perfect Pairings: Did you know microbiology is a key factor in crafting delicious beer? Chew on that and more at this social affair at Yards Brewing Company. Chat with Yards brewers and Monell sensory scientists, enjoy the open bar and discover the science of flavor pairings at five tasting stations featuring bites from such spots as Fette Sau, Little Baby?s Ice Cream and Han Dynasty. Attendees must be 21 or older.

? Science for Sinners: To close out the Science Festival, head to Frankford Hall to investigate the science behind the seven deadly sins: greed, sloth, wrath, pride, lust, envy and gluttony. Hear from seven presenters, including neuroscientists, psychologists and behaviorists, and indulge in drinks with happy hour pricing. Note that the subject material will be a bit racy (it?s a discussion of sin, after all).
