Veterans reflect on true meaning of Memorial Day during Aiken's parade

AIKEN, S.C.--Many spent their Memorial Day weekend in Aiken to honor the veterans and fallen heroes.

Hundreds of people from all over South Carolina and Georgia showed up with enthusiasm and lined the streets with flags.

The parade included live music from Signal Corps bands and patriotic floats; even dogs and horses joined the show. They showed their gratitude and respect for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham stated, "Memorial day is not just a start to summer. It's the day we set aside to remember the fallen."
He added, "This is the largest memorial day parade in South Carolina. There are only a handful of memorial day parades left, really."

But the real guest stars were the countless veterans and active duty military. They talked about the importance of remebering the heroes who never made it back home.

Corporal Clifton Halten who serves the Marine Corps just came back from Afgahnistan. He spoke about a friend he lost in Iraq.
Corporal Halten explained the difficulty of losing his peer by saying, "It's kind of hard, because I not only know the face, I know the name, I know the history, I know his relatives..." He also added, "[the loss] really makes you think about what you've taken for granted in the past."

The retired Sergeant Major B.T. Barnes also spoke about a friend whom he lost in the war.

"His name was John Cruise. I'll never forget John as long as I live, because he and I were very close. He's the first [World War II] veteran killed from the city of Columbia, and he's buried in Columbia."

Another retired Major General Perry M. Smith from U.S. Air Force mentioned wearing a Marine shirt in memory of Jimmie Dyess for the parade.

General Smith explained that one of Augusta's greatest heroes, Jimmie Dyess, was his wife's father. Jimmie Dyess won a Carnegie award and the Medal of Honor for his service.

The respect and memories of the fallen heroes highlight the true meaning of Memorial Day.

General Smith remarked, "[Memorial Day] is not a day for veterans and for general patriotism. It's to remind us of all the Jimmie Dyess's in the world."

He went on to talk about his roommate, Don Howard from West Point, and the importance of remembering those who died in combat, along with bringing their legacy forward.

Aiken has the largest Memorial Day parade in the state of South Carolina.

I always base the opinion of someone who actually does the profession or has been involved in the profession higher than just someone who writes about it, but has never actually been there.

One of the coaches gives his reason why the Spurs are so tough to defeat, and why they've won 18-games in a row and are undefeated to start in the playoffs.

"One thing they're really good at is locking into a team for a seven-game series and figuring out what needs to be done to be successful," another Western Conference assistant said. "They're an intelligent team . . .? an experienced team. They do a good job of not beating themselves. You have to play really well to beat them."

An interesting perspective that another assistant coach feels will work in the Spurs' favor is their superb pick-and-roll abilit. This coach says the Thunder haven't faced a pick-and-roll offense yet that uses their system so efficiently.

"Pick-and-roll is a big part of their offense," the second expert said, "but they'll really go to it even more, I think, against the Thunder. Oklahoma City's bigs haven't really faced that much high-quality pick-and-roll yet in these playoffs."

More of India?s urban families are rejecting traditional extended-family households, so older relatives are increasingly moving into elder-care facilities, an idea long stigmatized in the country.

TRIVANDRUM, India ? R. Padmanathan Nair sits on a plastic chair in the entryway of the Heritage senior home talking about the fellow residents who treat him like family, which is helpful seeing as his own rarely visits.

His wife tried to abscond with their valuables, he said, so he gave the house to a niece, who ignored him after she got the property. Now his daughter is the only one who visits the 76-year-old retired teacher here in the capital of the southern state of Kerala, and that?s just a few times a year.

?In abuse cases, parents don?t want to come out against their own children,? said Anjali Raje, deputy executive director of the International Longevity Center in Pune. ?So it?s swept under the rug.?

The idea of senior homes has long carried a stigma in India.

?I can?t imagine sending my parents to one of these,? said Sathish Kumar, 47, a Trivandrum rickshaw driver who shares care of his 77-year-old father with his brother. ?It?s rather tragic.?

But that?s changing, as more upscale gated communities for seniors, such as Mumbai?s pioneering Dignity Lifestyle, offer saunas, aromatherapy, gyms and pools.

Because it?s a relatively new concept, there?s a generational difference, with those in their 70s and 80s generally more unhappy about living in a senior home and those in their 60s ? a group that?s had more time to watch society change around them ? more accepting, said Dr. C.P. Muralidhara, care home manager at Utsav Retirement Resort outside New Delhi.

India, with its relatively young population, is still a long way from Western nations. Most extended families still live together, and even when grown children move away they tend to stay relatively close and visit often.

But the picture is changing, with the number of India?s people older than 60, now at 96 million, expected to double by 2030. Critics say government planners are so enamored of the ?India shining? narrative of its young people that they all but ignore the demographic shift.

?This is the government?s last priority,? said Roshan Jacob, an elder-care expert. ?We?re digging our own grave. It?s a 200% crisis for India if we don?t start thinking about this.?

"We got two clinics during the past months with female doctors. We have paved roads. But some projects were not well built and people still face some security threats," he said.

Frank] Baum books were some of the first books I read on my own, so I like being attached to something as iconic as this."

The film, directed by Sam Raimi, is a prequel to "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" that explains how the wizard came to power in the land. And while the cast is tight-lipped about their roles in the movie, Mila Kunis offered up a tiny explanation about her character, Theodora, to MTV News' Josh Horowitz.

"She's a good person who gets her heart broken," the actress explained. "What happens to young ladies when their heart gets broken?"

"They turn into horrible, evil witches," Horowitz answered.

With a smile, Kunis replied, "You said it, not me."
